We are pleased to announce that KÖNIG GALERIE, founded in 2002 by German art dealer Johann König, has opened a new space on the 5th floor and rooftop garden of MCM HAUS - MCM Seoul Flagship Store, which was designed and completed by Neri&Hu in 2016. The inaugural exhibition at KÖNIG SEOUL features works by internationally well-known artists, including Katharina Grosse, Jeppe Hein, Camille Henrot, Alicja Kwade, Helen Martin, Chiharu Shiota, Erwin Wurm, and so on.
With art space in Berlin, London, Tokyo, and Seoul, KÖNIG GALERIE currently represents 40 international emerging and established artists. The program focuses on interdisciplinary, concept-oriented, and space-based approaches in a variety of media.
Johann König comes from a family of influential German artistic figures. His father Kaspar König is the former director of Museum Ludwig in Cologne and the founder of Münster Skulptur Projekte, an exhibition of sculptures in public places in the town of Münster, Germany held every 10 years since 1977.
Given MCM's strong brand story and German roots, our design concept for MCM Haus was inspired by the Bauhaus movement, a prominent German school of thought that emerged in the 1920s founded by German architect, Walter Gropius. Gropius and the Bauhaus movement married experimentation in manufacturing with the craftsmanship and traditional arts and emphasized the totality of design. Beyond serving as just another architectural spectacle in Gangnam, we believed the store would serve as a new “home” for the MCM brand - a house that embodies Bauhaus's totality of artistic mediums.
