As the Year of the Tiger is approaching, DEZEEN brings readers a special preview, selecting 12 of the most anticipated architectural projects in China in the coming year. We are pleased to announce that Neri&Hu's project for Aranya Ningbo Xiangshan is on the list.
Situated in Xiangshang and off the coast of Ningbo, China, the project is rooted in the rich local history of a fortress as the center of culture, commerce, and shelter.
Encompassing five distinct building complexes on the edge of land and sea, this expansive project is unified by a monolithic plinth that fosters a new public realm for travelers who seek immersive cultural experiences. The destination of this secular pilgrimage will include a range of guest rooms and villas, a thermal bath, seaside leisure and dining, and a sanctum.
Just as Italo Calvino said in Invisible Cities, "Arriving at each new city, the traveler finds again a past of his that he did not know he had: the foreignness of what you no longer are or no longer possess lies in wait for you in foreign, unpossessed places.”
Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu remarked, "with an ocean scenery at the site so impressive, we felt the architecture needed to offer a sense of sublime, something beyond conventional beauty that could make people ponder their position in life."
